Green Customs Initiative's 19th Annual Partners Meeting
The Green Customs Initiative (GCI) held its 19th annual partners meeting on 19-20 February 2025 at the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) headquarters in The Hague. Co-chaired by the UNEP Law Division, which hosts the GCI Secretariat, and OPCW, the meeting brought together partners to review progress and discuss priorities for strengthening environmental enforcement.
Partners shared updates on recent activities, focusing on trade-related enforcement challenges, gender considerations in customs operations, and capacity-building initiatives. Discussions also addressed customs enforcement in free trade zones (FTZs), emphasizing the need for stronger oversight and regulatory frameworks. Additionally, efforts to expand training and knowledge resources, including new e-learning modules on e-waste, plastic waste, and mercury trade, were highlighted.
Looking ahead, partners reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing collaboration, improving enforcement strategies, and increasing outreach efforts. Strengthening partnerships with key organizations and securing resources to support joint activities will remain central to GCI’s work in 2025.
The GCI Secretariat thanks all partners for their contributions and ongoing engagement. The next annual partners meeting is expected to take place in early 2026.
